Will someone tell me how the hell the world got to the point where we need licenses to fish? In my opinion (and granted, I may be wrong) a license symbolizes the fact that the secular world agrees that a person is skilled enough to perform a certain action.

The state recognizes that a 16-year-old is at a reasonable enough age to allow him or her to operate a vehicle (even though I scored 1 point above passing on my 16th birthday). But when did fishing get to the point to where society needed to screen applicants? Since when is a person so incompetent that they can’t fish? The fucked up thing is, I’ve been asked, on more than one occasion to show proof of my fishing license.

If this isn’t the an oversight, I don’t know what is.

  1. I don’t know. I’ve heard those kids having been cranking the bass for a long time now. If someone doesn’t protect the bass, who will?

  3. Fishing licenses are one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever heard of. Why anybody would need to pass a test to sling a worm into a pond is beyond me.

I can understand needing a license for exotic fish, or for large fish. But to go out to some lake for some catch & release (or even to take some home to gut and eat) shouldn’t require a license.

  4. I suppose I meant to have a funny play on words: bass and bass. I don’t really remember, I was drunk.

  5. Just found this blog from Michael Ian Black blog comment perusing. It took me about four or five tries to find one worth commenting on. Good work.

The reason why we need fishing licenses is that, without it, we wouldn’t have the need for your friendly local wildlife/fish & game officers. They would have no purpose and instantly cease to exist. Do you know what a world without fish & game officers would be like?

Probably like Mongolia, where they have no fish and/or game.

  7. I think you’re all fucking retarded. Granted, I’m 10 beers deep, but I can still reason. This is more than most of you can say. The point of fishing licenses isn’t to prove that you can fish, OK? It’s to limit the amount of people that do fish. It’s to keep track of this information to prevent over-fishing. Its to prevent idiots like you from ravaging the fish population. While you may think you have a right to do “WHATEVER THE HELL I WANT”, in fact, we all share natural resources, which include fish. While I agree that most fishing-associated bureaucrats are douchebag-idiots, that doesn’t mean that their purpose isn’t meaningful and that you aren’t a fucking idiot. So please, think outside the tackle box next time.

  9. It’s ll about the revenue dude. Anything that can be tracked, licensed, or registered…will eventually get taxed.

  10. you pay for a fishing license to pay for fish hatcheries and such which restock all the fish that ppl who dont practice catch and release keep and eat, otherwise youd be pointlessly casting into a hole with water -fish… get it? got it? fuckin good
